Students will gain firsthand exposure to an emerging economy in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates has always been at the forefront of economic diversification. The country has the second largest economy in the Arab world and, more recently, has been attracting foreign direct investment. Tourism remains one of the main sources of revenue in the UAE although the country has also started focusing on creating a knowledgebased economy. Students participating in this program will gain an in depth understanding of the UAE by studying and interacting with company representatives and local hosts in the following areas:

Financial Banking and Investment
Business and Economics
Cultural and Heritage

3 credits for ECON 496

This program is typically offered every other year and was last offered in 2024.

Undergraduate students with a major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are eligible to apply for the CALS �� Scholarship. The scholarship deadline for fall programs is May 1, 2024.

Scholarships are available for incoming CALS freshman or transfer students that will study abroad during their first semester at Iowa State. Please email calsstudyabroad@iastate.edu for application details.

Important Note Regarding Missing Classes
Please note that participation on some travel courses require you to be away from campus for some school days. The College of Agriculture & Life Sciences tries to minimize the number of days missed for this purpose, but in some events, the inflexibility of the travel schedule prevents us from working completely within our breaks. Should you choose to enroll in a travel course that requires missing some class(es) on campus, you will need to contact your instructor directly to inquire whether or not arrangements can be made to make up this class work and/or exams. The CALS �� office can provide you with a letter explaining the dates of the trip. However, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor to determine the potential impact on your grade before signing up for a �� program. The instructor is responsible for determining the impact of any absence from class.

Meet Dr. Ajay Nair, "India: Crops, Culture, Food, and Traditions" Program Director

Program dates and itinerary are tentative and subject to change

Students will learn first-hand about different crops (vegetables, coconut, banana, tea, coffee, rice, rubber, cashew, spices, pineapple, etc.), their production techniques, and meet growers and entrepreneurs who find innovative ways to solve agricultural problems within a market economy. Students will visit regional vegetable, spice, and flower markets and have an opportunity to interact with students at the Kerala Agricultural University. In addition to agriculture, students will visit historic and cultural sites, temples and palaces, arts centers, backwaters, and get an immersive experience of food, culture, and traditions. The program will also include a visit to New Delhi and the immortal memorial, the Taj Mahal.

Participating students will earn 3 credits of Hort 4960 or Globe 4960 during the fall 2025 semester. This course fulfills the International Perspectives Requirement. This course has a pre-departure course component and a travel component.

This program was last offered in fall 2023, with travel over winter break 2023-2024.
