Chitale Dairy Mini-Internship

Learn more about dairy production and processing in India. Students will travel to Bhilwadi, India and stay at the Chitale Dairy farm for the duration of the mini-internship. The internship will include exposure to dairy cattle and water buffalo, a milk processing plant, a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and an agricultural extension program.

This program is open to any undergraduate student (freshmen through super senior) with a major in the agricultural and food sciences (based in College of Agriculture and Life Sciences). No dairy/animal science experience required (but experience can be helpful). Preference will be given to Dairy Science, Animal Science, and Food Science majors. No international travel experience required.

Students will learn first-hand about different crops (vegetables, coconut, banana, tea, coffee, rice, rubber, cashew, spices, pineapple, etc.), their production techniques, and meet growers and entrepreneurs who find innovative ways to solve agricultural problems within a market economy. Students will visit regional vegetable, spice, and flower markets and have an opportunity to interact with students at the Kerala Agricultural University. In addition to agriculture, students will visit historic and cultural sites, temples and palaces, arts centers, backwaters, and get an immersive experience of food, culture, and traditions. The program will also include a visit to New Delhi and the immortal memorial, the Taj Mahal.

Participating students will earn 3 credits of Hort 4960 or Globe 4960 during the fall 2025 semester. This course fulfills the International Perspectives Requirement. This course has a pre-departure course component and a travel component.

This program was last offered in fall 2023, with travel over winter break 2023-2024.

India Delivers "One-of-a-Kind" Experience

Emily Kihlstrom, a junior in agronomy, took part in a CALS travel course to India from December 29 to January 15. Participants were able to learn first-hand about India’s different crops (vegetables, coconut, banana, tea, coffee, rice, rubber, cashew, spices, pineapple, etc.) and production techniques. Students had the opportunity to visit regional vegetable, spice, and flower markets and interact with students at the Kerala Agricultural University.

Kihlstrom said she has always loved traveling and exploring new places. When she looked into study abroad courses, she knew India would be a one-of-a-kind trip and it was on her bucket list to visit.

One interesting thing Kihlstrom learned on the trip was that India’s major agricultural pests include wild boars and peacocks. “The tricky part of managing these animals is that farmers can’t easily kill them, since peacocks are the national bird of India and the boars are protected under India’s government. Some farmers can kill boars if they obtain a license to do so, but they can’t sell or eat the meat that comes from it,” said Kihlstrom.

Her favorite part of the experience was being immersed in a completely different culture. “From food to traditional dances, Kerala, India was a beautiful place to visit,” said Kihlstrom.
