Travel courses are typically 2-3 ISU faculty or staff members traveling with 10-25 students. The program includes a pre-departure class for course credit to learn about components related to the country or course and then 8 days to two weeks of international travel, typically during spring, summer, or fall break. The travel competent is arranged by the ISU faculty and staff that lead the program and all expenses are included in a program fee. Additional costs may apply, depending on the program.</p> <hr /> <h3>How to apply:</h3> <ol> <li><img alt="Brazil group summer 2018" src="/files/resize/page/images/brazil2018_explorationbythor4-263x350.jpg" style="float:right; height:350px; margin:5px; width:263px" width="263" height="350" /><strong>Research available programs:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="/programs?field_program_country_tid=All&amp;field_semester_tid=All&amp;field_year_value%5Bvalue%5D%5Byear%5D=&amp;field_program_department_tid=All&amp;field_type_of_travel_tid=21">Travel course programs</a> vary by topic, countries visited, departmental course credit, and terms offered. Most programs are offered every other year or on an annual basis.</li> <li><strong>Narrow down your search:&nbsp;</strong>Learn more about the programs you are interested in by talking to the program directors, meeting with a study abroad advisor, or asking other students! Learn about the various topics that will be covered within each travel course and what best aligns with your interests.&nbsp;</li> <li><strong>Notify your academic advisor </strong>of your interest in studying abroad and make sure the travel course fits into your course schedule. Determine if the travel course can count towards international perspective, US diversity, or international agriculture credits.</li> <li><strong>Apply for a program(s) in </strong><a href="http://isuabroad.iastate.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Abroad.Home">ISUAbroad</a>. Program applications include emergency contact information, insurance and liability waivers, medical information, and questionnaires. There is no financial obligation for completing an application and you are able to apply for multiple programs at a time. Once the application deadline has passed, program directors will review all applications and select participants. For some programs, students are interviewed before being accepted into the program.</li> <li><strong>Apply for a passport:&nbsp;</strong>International programs require you to have a passport to travel, but domestic travel courses such as Study USA do not. Once you plan to study abroad, apply for a passport as soon as possible because processing can take 6 to 8 weeks. If you are a first-time traveler and applying for your first passport, you are likely eligible for our <a href="/step-step-guide-obtaining-passportpassport-reimbursement">passport reimbursement program</a>! There are also additional&nbsp;<a href="/scholarships-and-funding-opportunities">Scholarship and Funding Opportunities</a>&nbsp;to consider&nbsp;from academic departments, university, and nationally-competitive programs.</li> <li><strong>Commit to the program:&nbsp;</strong>Once you have been officially accepted by the program director(s), you will need to go back into ISUAbroad and commit to the program. There is typically a 5-to-10-day window between being accepted and the deadline to commit to a program. If you have been accepted to multiple programs, you can choose which one you would prefer to participate in. If you have been waitlisted for a program, you will be notified if a spot becomes available and will then be able to commit. Once you have committed to a program, there will be some post-application forms and information to complete.</li> <li><strong>Attend Class:&nbsp;</strong>Faculty-led travel courses typically meet as a group during the semester before travel. For example, fall break and winter break programs meet during the fall semester, and spring break, May term, and summer programs meet during the spring semester. These classes help you learn about the location(s) you will be visiting and get ready for the trip!</li> <li><strong>Prepare to travel! </strong>As part of your pre-departure classes, a representative from the study abroad office will share important travel information and details based on the country you are traveling to. This is the time to ask questions and voice any concerns you may have about communication, hotel information, transportation, medical information, luggage, and more.
