This course provides students with a guided exploration of food, culture and agriculture in two Mediterranean countries (Italy and Greece). It exposes students to food systems from production to distribution, to marketing.

In Thessaloniki (Greece's second largest city), they will visit farms (olives, rice, grapes, herbs, greenhouses, etc.), a winery, and the American Farm School and Perrotis College. They will travel by bus through the agricultural heartland of Greece, stopping to visit a medieval monastery. In Athens, they will visit the Acropolis and Parthenon.

From Greece students will travel to Naples, Italy to visit the archeological site of Pompeii. The visit to Rome will introduce students to the United Nations Food and Agriculture organizations based there as well as the world renowned gastronomy of Italy.

Overall, the program takes a systems perspective in understanding the interactions among agriculture, food and culture, including an historical perspective looking back over 2000 years. Students will visit at least 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Comparing Food Systems - Iowa vs California - May 2025

This course will review food systems frameworks and considerations, focusing on food supply chains (production systems, distribution, processing, and retail/markets). Discussion topics will include influences such as natural resources (water), innovation and technology, demographics (labor), and economics (price of food).

The pre-departure course will include tours of Iowa food production to assist in comparing and contrasting regional food systems in Iowa and California.

While traveling in California, students will visit a variety of farms and food production. Tours include wineries in Napa and Paso Robles, almond orchards and processing, dairy farms and cheese production, fruit and vegetable production including a visit to Driscoll's, coffee production, and seafood fishing.

Students will also have the opportunity to visit Sequoia National Park, the Santa Barbara harbor, and to choose between visiting the Monterey Aquarium or going on a whale watching tour.

Tropical Agriculture and Culture in Ghana - Winter Break 2025-2026

This travel study program will cover farming systems in tropical agriculture including livestock and crop production, agroforestry, animal ecology (wildlife), and Ghanaian culture in food, art and festival, music in three ecological zones of Ghana. This travel study program will be beneficial to students in Agronomy, Animal Science, Animal Ecology, and Agricultural Studies. The course will consist of in-person class lectures, discussions, community service projects, visits to private farms (livestock and crop production), research institutes, and universities in Ghana.

This Travel Study course will take place in the Coastal Savannah, the Semi deciduous rainforest, and the High rain-forest Evergreen ecological zones of Ghana, where students will learn about tropical agriculture, agroforestry, animal production, animal ecology, and aspects of Ghanaian culture in foods, art, and music in the three ecological zones chosen for the travel study. Students will have the opportunity to interact with local farmers for community service.

Students will visit a National Park in the Western Region, the Akansa Game Reserve, and Nini-Suhien National Park in the high rain-forest evergreen ecological zone of Ghana, designated as an International Biosphere Reserve to serve as a nature museum for research.

Enhance your understanding of production and competition in agricultural world markets!

Students will analyze production agriculture (a typical farm or ranch), business, and trade in Argentina and compare them with respect to the U.S. Pre-departure orientation will familiarize students with the history, culture, politics, geography, soils, agriculture, economy, and trade of Argentina.

3 credits of Agron 4960 or Econ 4960 (1-2 credits in AGRON 4960 + 1-2 credits in ECON 4960 to total 3 credits)

This program is typically offered every three years, and was last offered in spring 2025.

Please note that participation on some travel courses require you to be away from campus for some school days. This program will expose students to Singapore's small, but highly competitive economy and showcase how culture plays a role in the functioning of the economy. Additionally, students will learn about Singapore's innovative and alternative methods of agricultural production that have been developed to achieve food security in a country with a limited ability to produce it own food.

Students will also explore the state's rapid economic development, its culture, history, and geography, as well as its financial institutions and businesses. This program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing. Participants should have a willingness to step outside their comfort zone, be a team player, and practice cultural sensitivity.

This study abroad program aims to give students a better understanding of beer and chocolate production both in Germany and Belgium, the two world and European leaders in these areas of food and beverage production.

Munich is renowned as the heartland of Bavarian culture, stands as a beacon for beer enthusiasts worldwide. Brewing traditions date back centuries, with iconic “biergarten” and historic breweries like Hofbräuhaus. From crisp lagers to rich dunkels, Munich's beers are crafted with meticulous care and enjoyed amidst the city's vibrant social scene, making it a must-visit destination, for understanding both tradition and innovation in beer and brewing.

Brussels, Belgium's capital, is famous not only for its political importance (EU Commission, NATO headquarters) but also for its chocolate heritage. Renowned chocolatiers dot the city's streets, creating exquisite pralines, truffles, and bonbons that tempt the senses and delight chocolate connoisseurs from around the globe. Belgian chocolate, with its velvety texture and complex flavors, is more than a treat. It is a cultural symbol synonymous with craftsmanship and indulgence. Belgium is renowned for its diverse and flavorful beers, ranging from Trappist ales brewed by monks to fruity fermented with wild yeast. These beers often showcase complex flavors and aromas, making Belgium a mecca for beer enthusiasts worldwide. This immersive study trip to Puerto Rico is designed for students interested in learning about the island's culinary heritage, food systems, agricultural practices, and food processing industries. Students will explore the diverse and vibrant food culture of Puerto Rico by participating in tasting immersions tailored specifically to the local culinary traditions. The course includes visits to coffee and chocolate plantations, rum distilleries, farms, food processors, and local markets, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the island's food landscape.
