Area of Expertise:

Shelley Taylor, Director, Office for Global Engagement, and before that, was the Director of CALS ��. Shelley’s primary responsibility are to advance the Global priorities of the College which includes graduating global citizens and supporting departments in their global engagement involving international travel, hosting of international visitors and building relationships across the globe. Shelley received her BA from the University of Colorado in international affairs and her MA from Iowa State University in anthropology traveling through CALS’ then ‘International Agriculture Programs’ office to complete her master’s research in Uzbekistan. Shelley co-leads the Dean’s Global Agriculture and Food Leadership program to Rome, is an advisor to ISU’s chapter of IAAS the International Association of Students in Agriculture and Related Sciences, co-instructs Globe 320 and Globe 321/322 for Globe students completing their required international internships and completed ISU’s Emerging Leaders Academy in 2021. When not at work, Shelley enjoys travel adventures of all kinds and amateur photography.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Pathways to Innovation and Leadership Program supports students develop their innovation, leadership, and other practical skills needed for success in the modern world through participation in high impact, value-added learning opportunities that will positively influence their academic, professional, and personal goals.

The Pathways Access to High Impact Learning Award is intended to increase access to undergraduate student participation in high impact, value-added learning opportunities by lowering financial barriers. Such opportunities may include ��, Study USA, presenting at a research conference, unpaid internships, or service learning.

Upon completion of the high-impact opportunity, students will complete their Pathway Planner that describes their participation and the specific skills gained that benefited their academic, professional, and/or professional goals.

Term of Award: All awards are for one year.
Award Amount: Up to $1,000
Eligibility:

Undergraduates currently enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
In good academic standing.
Enrolled or accepted to participate in a high-impact opportunity between Fall 2024 and Summer 2025 (December 15 – August 24, 2025).
Demonstrated need of financial support to participate in a high-impact opportunity.

Can I study abroad as a freshman?

Yes! Most travel courses are open to freshman but be sure to review eligibility requirements. Although some programs can be competitive, there are several opportunities for first-year students to study abroad.

For semester programs, students must have an established ISU GPA. Students in their first semester at ISU will not have earned ISU credits yet, so it is more common for students to go abroad their second year.

Did you study abroad in the last year and have some awesome photos? Submit them in our spring photo contest for a chance to win an ISU Bookstore giftcard! Photos from any travel program, domestic or international, can be included.

Entry Categories:

Cuisine and Culture- Share a memorable meal, cultural immersion or interaction while abroad
ISU Spirit- Where did you showcase your Cyclone pride?
Scenic- Share your new favorite view
High Impact (NEW)- show us your favorite hands-on tour or experience from your trip (farm tours, cooking classes, animal interactions, industry visits, learning opportunity)

Students can submit one photo entry per category for a maximum of 4 submissions total.

Submission Guidelines:

Photos must have been taken by CALS students or non-CALS students that travelled on a CALS program.
Photos must have been taken from programs travelling from August 1, 2023, to April 1, 2024. This would include fall semester 2023, fall break 2023, winter break 2023-2024, spring semester 2024, and spring break 2024
Entries should be submitted as a png or jpeg and can be emailed to calsstudyabroad@iastate.edu by April 1.
Entries need to include the student’s name and program title.
Any photos entered in the contest may be considered by the CALS �� office to be used in promotional and recruitment materials.

We will be accepting submissions until 11:59pm on April 1st. The winner from each category will receive a gift card from the University Bookstore and a CALS �� t-shirt!

Contest judging will be open to everyone and take place on our CALS �� Instagram April 8th - 12th.
