Dr. Amber Anderson

Amber Anderson in Costa Rica
Program:
Soils, Crops, and Natural Resources of Costa Rica
We are lucky to have great partners in both the CALS study abroad office and Costa Rica who have made it a great experience and make it possible for this trip to be offered as an opportunity here at ISU.

Dr. Amber Anderson is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Agronomy.

Why did you decide to lead a study abroad course?

I decided to lead a study abroad because a) a study abroad was an impactful experience I had as an undergrad and b) Dr. Lee Burras took me to Costa Rica as a new instructor and was a great mentor as I stepped into this role leading a study abroad.

Why do you think students should study abroad? Dr. Anderson with Costa Rican soil!

It is a great way to gain a new perspective on agriculture, add tools to your ag toolbox, and expand your window of understanding. Additionally, the experiences on these trips are not what you would get as an average tourist. The Costan Rican farmers we visit are fascinating, and always are happy to share with ISU students.

What are you most excited about?

I am excited about so many things about the Costa Rica trip. First, I enjoy the warmer weather, gorgeous views, and ocean at a time when Iowa can be a bit dreary. Next, the food from fresh pineapple to fresh coffee and all of the meals we eat well in Costa Rica. And last, but not least, the friendly people, I always learn something new, get to see innovative new practices, meet new people, visit both new places and some of the same ones to see how the farms are changing over time. I'm also excited to have some journalism students with us to capture some more of those experiences.

What other international experiences do you have? If no other international experiences, is there a place you would like to lead a program, but haven鈥檛?

My first international experience was to Ghana, I signed up as an undergraduate going with Dr. Andrew Manu. I have visited Spain, Nicaragua, and also done some soils research in Uganda working with the ISU-Uganda program.

What have you learned leading courses? Dr. Anderson in Costa Rica

Leading a study abroad includes learning more about people, yourself, and others, but also, learning so much more about the world around me from Costa Rica cultural traditions to orchid care, as well as patience and understanding, from language barriers to inevitable delays during travel. We are lucky to have great partners in both the CALS study abroad office and Costa Rica who have made it a great experience and make it possible for this trip to be offered as an opportunity here at ISU.
