Why did you choose to participate in these study abroad programs?
I chose to study abroad in Greece and Italy because I had never been overseas before, and Greece was a bucket-list item for me! I also heard great things from students who went on the trip before me, and I had to apply. For the U.S. Virgin Islands trip, the warmth wasn't the only attractive part of the opportunity but it was definitely a plus in the cold Iowa winter! I was also really drawn to the idea of learning more about marine life through snorkeling on the trip.
How did you benefit personally, professionally, or academically from your study abroad experience?
I experienced immense growth throughout both of my study abroad opportunities. Whether it was personal or professional, I learned so much about myself when traveling abroad. I felt I grew in the areas of responsibility, and gained independence through my experiences. Professionally, I was able to connect with students from the College of Ag that I didn't know before, but also meet new people abroad which was very fun. Academically, I learned all about the cultures and different agricultural practices in the different countries.
What was your most memorable experience abroad?
A memorable experience I had abroad was meeting our professor's family and visiting his hometown. This experience was so memorable because we ate at a restaurant he grew up visiting and it was some of the best food we ate the entire trip. Meeting his family and getting a more personal angle of the culture in the country was something I'll never forget.
Have scholarships impacted your decision to study abroad?
Scholarships have definitely impacted my decision to study abroad. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship for my first study abroad trip to Greece and Italy which helped cover trip expenses.
What advice would you give to students interested in studying abroad?
If you are worried about spending the money to go on a study abroad trip, don't. Studying abroad trips have been some of my greatest memories in college and I plan to do at least one more before I graduate. There's no better time than now to travel abroad and you won't regret taking a trip! Having an itinerary planned for you, trustworthy tour guides with professors, and scholarships to help cover travel expenses - there's no better time to travel than now as a college student!
